Free Willy
They were born to be free, not to be part of a show.
Orcas also known as killer whales because they feed on other marine mammals such as dolphins, seals, baby whales, sharks, among other marine mammals, they spend 60% of their time searching for food traveling hundreds of kilometers. They achieve this thanks to the fact that they are good swimmers, managing to swim around 120 km a day. Killer whales move in pods of between 2 - 15 individuals.
Why are killer whales threatened?
Killer whales captured for aquariums
Killer whales are very intelligent mammals, which gives them the ability to learn and perform tricks, a characteristic that caught the attention of humans, causing them to be captured and denied their freedom for the entertainment of humans. Do you think it's fair to take away his freedom for an entertainment from us?
Contamination of their habitat
Pollution is a big problem today that affects us all. Water pollution affects the habitat, health and survival of killer whales. It also not only affects killer whales but also their prey, causing a reduction in their food.
Excessive noise in the oceans
Killer whales perform echolocation (it is nature's sound orientation system, it is used for hunting and orientation) so they are sensitive to industries and military activities causing them to become disoriented causing them to end up on the beaches and die.
What harm does captivity do?
As we know orcas move in herds, what do you think happens to them when they are captured? That's right they destroy the herd, they destroy families.
When they usually swim 120 km a day, in captivity they don't even swim 100 meters.
Its dorsal fin can also be mentioned, although it is not known for sure why the dorsal fins are folded in captivity, it is believed that it is due to the lack of swimming in deep waters as they used to do in the wild. Swimming at great depths helps exert pressure through the mass of water, keeping the internal tissues of the fin in good condition, keeping it upright.
It can also be dehydration and overheating that occurs from not being able to swim freely and having to be exposed to the air for a long period of time due to training and shows.
When they just capture an orca they kill it by taking away its freedom.
